Tunnels of lava

Over the years I’ve been out to Undara quite a few times, both privately and with work. It’s one of those places where I can honestly say the photos never live up to the reality of how incredible it really is.

Imagine giant tunnels formed milennia ago by lava flowing over the landscape. Imagine those tunnels running for kilometres underground, the roof towering above you as you make your way deeper and deeper into the ever-darkening cavern.

It really is a wonderful experience and like nothing else in this part of the world. Just a short drive from Cairns you definitely need at least a one night stay to do all the walks in the area as well as the tours through the tubes. If you can, time your visit to coincide with one of the concert events out there, such as Opera in the Outback.
