Food glorious food

A chef puts the finishing touches on a meal at Zai Restaurant in Port Douglas

Food photography. It’s a whole specialty to itself. Eager diners happily snap their meals before posting them to all manner of social media for their friends and followers to drool over.

I don’t do that. In fact I’ve usually completely finished eating by the time I realise I should probably take a picture. But that doesn’t mean I can’t photograph restaurants and food!

A great assignment I had was to photograph a series of restaurants in Port Douglas for an airline in-flight magazine. The emphasis was on the establishment, as opposed to the food, so it was more about environmental portraiture and showing the building.

Not that that means I didn’t have the opportunity to throw some food in there every so often. And the best thing about it? Many of them kindly offered me the food to eat afterwards! I was in heaven.
