Long before Captain Cook ever stumbled across these shores aboriginal people had 40,000 year connection to this vast continent. Over that time, as with indigenous cultures all over the world, they developed their own creation stories and art forms.
Aboriginal art is increasingly popular around the world and even artists from such out of the way places as Aurukun, on the Cape York Peninsula, are able to exhibit and sell their pieces all around the world.
Of course there’s nowhere better to buy than from the original artist in their hometown. A well-known style of art from this part of the world is the spotted shark, here for sale at the Aurukun Arts Centre.
