Cook’s View

cape york cooktown grassy hill view down to harbour
Looking down on yachts moored in Cooktown Harbour from the summit of Grassy Hill.

Sure there’s a few more houses but you have to think this view hasn’t changed a hell of a lot in the last couple of hundred years.

The Endeavour River in Cooktown provided a safe haven for Captain Cook and his crewmen in June of 1770. Having just extricated themselves from a prickly situation on a coral reef just down the coast at Cape Tribulation, they took a few weeks here to re-supply, make repairs and make more observations about this new land.

Visitors to Cooktown can get a sense of what the crew might have found with a wonderful view from the top of Grassy Hill out over the surrounding countryside. Apart from the town itself the area is relatively pristine and untouched, and a wonderful stop on any visit to this part of the world.
